In Memory of Rex Minor

Class of 1984
Courtland High School
|
|
Sunrise, April 15, 1966 – Sunset, January 15, 2000
Rex Anthony Minor was born to CMSGT Donald C. Minor and Jackie Ballard on April 15, 1966 in Riverside, California. Rex was the fifth of six children, one of whom Donald C. Minor, Jr., preceded him in death. Rex moved to Virginia with his father Donald C. Minor in 1972. His Christian training began at an early age. He was baptized at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Spotsylvania, Virginia. His formal education began at McGuire Air Force Base in Wrightstown, New Jersey. He graduated from Courtland High School in 1984 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1985. Rex was a Navy Veteran; he served on the Aircraft Carrier John F. Kennedy and the Theodore Roosevelt. During Rex’s deployment to Southwest Asia, he received numerous citations, in particular the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, United Nations Medal, Air Force Service Medal and many more. He received an honorable discharge on December 25, 1990.
On Saturday morning, January 15, 2000, God removed Rex from our midst…
On September 12, 1996, Rex united in marriage with Kathryn (Katie) Navarro. In 1997, Rex and Katie relocated from Lynchburg, VA to Tallahassee, FL. From this union, Katie gave birth to their beautiful son, Gavin Anthony Minor on November 5, 1999. Rex considered his marriage to Katie and the birth of their son Gavin, his greatest accomplishments.
Rex accepted a position with General Dynamics as a Senior Electronic Technician. Rex was an exciting person; he had a zest for living and a great sense of humor. He loved skiing, music, poetry, computers, running and cars.
Rex had many, many friends throughout the country. No one was a stranger to him. If you met him you liked him. If homegoings are indeed a joyous occasion, then Rex will be warmly greeted by his brother, Donald C. Minor, IIl; grandmothers, Leitha Minor, Viola Carmen & grandfather, John Minor. Rex leaves to cherish his memories dear, his loving wife Katie Minor & son Gavin Anthony Minor of Tallahassee, Florida. Father, Donald C. Minor and stepmother, Motoe’ (Toni) Minor of Spotsylvania, VA; Biological mother, Jackie Ballard of Milford, OH; Surrogate mother, Ruth Minor-Sistrunk of San Antonio, TX; sisters, Serena DaSilva of Redondo Beach, CA, Ricky Renee Ballard of Cincinnati, OH; brothers, John & Susan Minor of Tampa, FL and Michael Minor of Dale City, VA. He also leaves behind his loving aunts, Arlene Blue of Peterson, NJ, Ruth & Gene Sistrunk of San Antonio, TX, Mary Minor of Inglewood, CA; Uncles John & Lecia Minor of Paterson, NJ, Andrew & Linda Minor of Spotsylvania, VA, Calvin Minor of New Brunswick, NJ, Wayne & Van Lawrence of Spotsylvania, VA; Great aunts, Nancy Lewis of Spotsylvania, VA and Eva & Moses Oliver of Washington, DC. Rex also leaves numerous nieces, nephews & cousins. |

Rex was not only a good classmate and good friend, but he put his whole heart into defending our country. For this I will forever be thankful. God bless you Rex, I'm sure you've got everyone in heaven laughing just like you did here in earth. |

The following “Memorial Tribute to the Fallen Classmates of Courtland’s Class of 1984” was read by Alumnus Charles Anderson, during our Reunion & Dance on Saturday evening, October 17, 2009:
SHORT BY A FEW…
When we graduated in 1984; Life lay before us, there was so much to do; The world was ours to conquer and to explore, that summer evening when we left Courtland’s door.
There were jobs to be found, the military to serve & further education to be had; Followed by someday becoming proud Moms & Dads. Some chose to travel many miles away; And for others, this was the perfect place to stay.
Some may have accomplished most things they had planned; While in other lives, not everything went as they had planned. For some, there were many changes to be made; Including some adjustments along life’s way.
But no matter what, as we gather once more; I will always be proud to be in Courtland’s Class of ’84.
As we renew old acquaintances and reminisce about things we used to do; We will learn the Class of ’84 is sadly, short by a few…
Some classmates have departed this life along the way; And are absent from our 25-Year Gathering here today. Now as their names are read; We will remember things they once did or said. And their faces will become vivid once more; Though they haven’t come through the door…
So let us live our lives; Mindful of the things we say and do; For the next classmate missing may be me or you…
--
At this time, please join me in observing a moment of silence for our Fallen Classmates:
• Faith Betts • Wendi Borders • Stacy Foster • Michael Harmon • John Houck • Dawn Long • Rex Minor • Sherry Robinson • And our fallen Principal, Mr. Robert P. Woods
“We honor you because we were classmates, and we miss you because we were friends…”
If you have not already done so, please take the opportunity to visit our Memorial Table honoring our fallen classmates and Mr. Woods.
Thank you. |

We joined the Navy together, served on the same ship, and emailed often. We had lunch all over the world, and stayed tight as teammates should. We had a beer the Christams before you died and talked about when the Navy would end for both of us.
Well Rex, one day I will join you in the garden of stone, but I retired at the rank we both promised we would reach. You name was listed on my retirement program as a side boy as my name was listed as an escout for you on your last day.
I miss you, but thank God I knew you. Enjoy your rest, see you again in a few.
Your Friend and Shipmate

Rex was my brother, in this world and in Christ, We were members of Future farmers of America, and we both received our State Farmers degree, we got in a lot of trouble together, but I wouldn't change a thing, life is a learning experience. Glad I finally found my way to this web site. Rex and I were friends, great sports players, we were very close, sad to see he has left this world, but not forgotten!@! I love ya man! God bless you and everyone around you!! <3 Big Mack (Howie) |
